Stanhoe Home Guard platoon, taken at Burnham Norton at some point during the second world war. The group seems to be well armed (Sten submachine guns and a Lewis gun), which suggests a date later in the war.

Back row: Len Wells, unknown, Ernie Ireson, Billy Walker, Kenny Ayres, Cyril Brown

Middle row: Jack Middleditch, Stanley Sampher, Ronnie Newell, Stanley Steward, Frederick William (Tom) West, Reggie Ayres, Russell Brown

Front row: Bob Fenn, Jack Frost, Billy Steward, Tom Johnson, Harry Tidd, John Rowe, Fred Rayner

In front with Lewis gun: Reggie Ireson

Thanks to everyone who contributed names to this list, and apologies for the fact that they were lost for several years following a computer problem.

Also see Arthur Walker’s memories at https://stanhoe.org/history/families/Walker, where he tells the story of the Blacker Bombard (probably obsolete by the time this photo was taken) and mentions that the commanding officer was at one time Jock Johnson.

Ronnie Newell (https://stanhoe.org/history/sound/sound-2) also mentions the Home Guard in his oral history recording. Ronnie is in the middle row, third from the left.

The 3rd person from the right in the middle row is my father, Frederick William (Tom) West. He was friends with ? Walker who is 3rd person from right at the back. Hope this helps.
