Parish Council Matters:–

• War Memorial:– A Councillor, aided by Stanhoe village’s friend Tim Bentinck, hosed and scrubbed the Memorial in preparation for Memorial Sunday. The short outdoor service on the day was held in the bright afternoon light ably led by the Rev Peter Cook and wreaths were laid. A service was subsequently held in All Saints Church. Our ambition is to repaint the engraved names and work continues in this direction.

• Parish Council Meeting Dates for next year:– At our meeting in November we agreed to hold our regular meetings on the second Wednesday of each alternative month from January. We managed this (except for January) so the planned meetings will take place in 2023 at 6:00pm on Jan 4th, Mar 8th, May 10th July 12th Sept 13th and Nov 8th. Please make a note in your diaries. The public are welcome to come to these meetings and there is always the opportunity to have your say, so please come if you can.

• Cross Lane Pond and the Willow tree:– We are discussing the ownership of the Pond at the Bircham Road end and the maintenance of the willow tree. Should the Council carry the cost or find another solution; any views or opinions would be welcome - please respond to our clerk Wayne Leighton.

• Parish Emergency Plan Meeting:– As mentioned last month we will have had our first public meeting to discuss this and the various options on dealing with emergencies in the village; we hope to report back in the next issue.

• Party in the Village Hall, Friday January 13:–The MEHM Trustees and Stanhoe Parish Council are planning a joint party in the Reading Room, Cross Lane on the 13th January to highlight our new defibrillator and to greet any village residents over drinks, nibbles and entertainment. We will have a licensed bar and look forward to meeting all who can come. This will start around 7:00pm.

• SAM 2:– The traffic machine was positioned at the Pond facing Docking so this is effectively almost at the ‘end’ of the village for the traffic coming from Bircham or Docking. Of the 22,601 vehicles that went past, 19,211 were going 32 mph or less. The maximum speed recorded was 55 mph on Monday 17th at 7:50 in the morning, but he was obviously the exception, and the average speed was 27 mph. There is definitely an encouraging reduction in the (ludicrous) speeds people are driving in the village but an inexorable rise in the volume of traffic we ‘enjoy’. Over 45,000 a month is quite a lot!

• Stanhoe’s Future Needs:– We are still preparing our budget for the 2023 financial year. Any suggestions on where our attention could be directed would be welcome. Please contact Wayne.

• Next PC Meeting:– As per the above, this will be held on Wednesday January 4th.

  In the meantime the whole Parish Council wish to extend our warmest Christmas Greetings, with more hopes for a happy and prosperous New Year to all in the village and beyond!

Christmas lights:–

Derek Scales is once more busy putting up his Christmas lights display in his garden up The Green. The wonderful display will be turned on on 19th November and will remain until Twelfth Night 6th January.

All donations collected in appreciation will be given to Tapping House. It is hoped that everyone will be generous in supporting this worthy cause.

Stanhoe & Barwick WI:–

Thursday 1st December:– Joan Hocking, classical singer with “Something Wonderful”. Songs from film, musical, popular opera and classical crossover. To be held in The Reading Room, Stanhoe. Starting at 2:00pm.

Our 2023 Programme is still under wraps, but has our usual eclectic mix of talks - from beekeeping to Oxburgh Hall to “Life with Nanny”.

Stanhoe Methodist Church:–

A warm welcome awaits you at Stanhoe Methodist Church in December.

All ages welcome. As usual, we meet on alternate Sunday mornings as follows:–

• 11th December: Christmas Carol Service at 11:00am

  Led by Local Preacher Stephen Harrington, who always brings his guitar!

• 25th December: Christmas Day

  “Come and join the Celebrations”: Short Family Service from 9:30am to 10:00am.

  Led by Local Preacher Elizabeth MacLeod, who doesn’t have a guitar, but has promised NO sermon!

The BUILD Charity volunteer campaign:–

The BUILD Charity are looking for people to support our social events with a small group of adults with disabilities, with all expenses covered. If it is a relaxing weekend that you are after, this could be a Sunday Roast, a Sunday afternoon Walkabout, a Grow and Go gardening session or even a Sunday afternoon cinema trip. If you enjoy even more excitement, why not head into the city for our Ten Pin Tuesdays or even a Wednesday Club Social!

Alternatively, if you have expertise in marketing, fundraising, event management or photography and are willing to share your skills with us, we would also love to hear from you!

We believe that volunteers should get as much out of the BUILD Charity as they put in, so there are many benefits to these roles. As a BUILD Charity volunteer, you attend events whenever it suits your schedule, all volunteer expenses are covered by the charity and by becoming a BUILD volunteer, you receive your disability awareness training and safeguarding training.

A History of Norfolk in 100 Places:–

More than 50 people came from all around North Norfolk to Stanhoe Village Hall on October 22nd to hear Peter and Susanna Wade-Martins talk about some of their favourite places that feature in their book “A History of Norfolk in 100 Places”.

The MEHM Trust very generously lent the Hall to the Church for the event. Laura Faulks decorated the room with autumn flowers and jars of fairy lights and many of the guests commented on how lucky Stanhoe is to have such an attractive venue.

The Rev Peter Cook did an excellent job as Master of Ceremonies and after the talk had ended everyone stayed on to enjoy the drinks and canapés.

Thanks to the generosity of the audience, and to Mr & Mrs Wade-Martins who kindly gave a percentage of the sale of the books they sold on the evening, the event made a total of over £800 for All Saint’s Church.
