Saints Alive: Stanhoe and Barwick Newsletter

April 2022

Parish Council Matters:–

  • Ukraine:– It is hard to concentrate on our local village concerns when the horrors of events in Ukraine are daily updated in the media. It is also gratifying to see the tangible sympathy and concerns evidenced by local people in the very busy aid collection points in our area. One has to hope for the best and in the meantime also get on with what seems a less crucial life in Stanhoe and our surrounds. None of what we do in any way diminishes our abiding concerns for what is going on in Eastern Europe.

  • Stanhoe Support:– It is too easy to take for granted the effort, and work, much of it unpaid, that takes place in the village throughout the year, which goes unsung but would be sorely missed in their absence. Our thanks should go to Bill Punter for keeping the surrounding area to the War Memorial weed-free and tidy, to Derek Scales for keeping the grassy surrounds to the pond, and a few other areas, neatly trimmed, Brian Gorton for his work on the Pond and the Play Area Equipment amongst others, Mike Wilson for his work on the tractor traffic (Egmere) and other Council activities, and the Speedwatch team organised by Terry Austin who operate on one morning every week recording the speeds of traffic though the 30 mph area in the village. The Parish Council and the Clerk undertake a number of other duties. All these in the effort to keep Stanhoe the safe and attractive place it has always been.

  • Speed Sign:– The sign was positioned last month at Longwall Barn facing the Pond. This is deep in the village and facing traffic that has had to turn off the Burnham Market road in the direction of Bircham and King’s Lynn. A total of 11,726 vehicles went past and while the top speed recorded was 55 mph (at 05:50 am on Monday 21st Feb) well over 50% were doing less than 30 mph. This is a welcome trend!

  • Annual General Meeting:– This is scheduled for Wednesday May 11th. Drinks and nibbles will be provided at 7:00pm after the meeting. All are most welcome.

  • Queen’s Platinum Jubilee:– Meetings and discussions are taking place to explore the interest for some village activities to celebrate the Jubilee on Saturday June 4th. Any ideas and suggestions would be most welcome. The PC would like to support any of these that it can; please watch this space for more details as they become available!

  • Gardens Open:– As previously advised, the very popular Stanhoe Gardens Open Day will be on Saturday June 18th this year (usually 2:00 pm). Please plan to come with your friends if you can.

  • War Memorial:– This is a repeat announcement; we have been in contact with the War Memorials Trust to maintain and repair of the Pond Monument. If anyone wishes to suggest any suitable local contractor, please contact our Clerk.

Ukraine Appeal:–

To those of you who kindly donated to help Ukrainian families, what an amazing response we had.

We have been with 3 deliveries to the Lavender Farm with toiletries, medicine, clothes, toys etc. all much appreciated by their staff who helped us unload our cars. They have taken one full lorry load to Ukraine and another on to Poland.

We hope it has been of help.

Stanhoe Open Gardens Day 2022:–

  • The annual Open Gardens Day in Stanhoe is always an event to look forward to. This year it will be on Saturday 18th June from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm when eight gardens will be open. There will be stalls selling plants, cakes, vintage clothes and memorabilia. Pimms will be on sale at the Village Hall and CreamTeas will be at Isabel Lodge.

  • Proceeds in aid of our beautiful All Saints’ Church. Please put the date in your diaries as it will be an occasion not to be missed.

  • Any queries please contact Pen on 01485518324 or penroche@icloud.com.

We are finally back:–

Stanhoe Village Screen are pleased to announce that we are resuming our film nights after the long COVID break.

We will present:–

‘DREAM HORSE’ (PG) (Comedy/Drama) Friday 29th April at 7:30pm

This feel good British comedy is a true-life tale of a Welsh barmaid called Jan Vokes (Toni Collette) who becomes the leader of a quirky small-town syndicate that raises a champion racehorse. It is a lovely story of the triumph of the underdog and with strong performances from Toni Collette and Damien Lewis the odds are that you will love it.

Venue:– Stanhoe Reading Room and Village Hall, Cross Lane, PE31 8PS

Tickets:– £5 on the door to include a complimentary drink. Doors open 7:00pm
