Saints Alive: Stanhoe and Barwick Newsletter
September 2021
Parish Council Matters/Reminders:–
- Queen Elizabeth Hospital:– A campaign was recently launched to encourage people to ‘sign’ a petition to trigger Government action to fund a new Queen Elizabeth Hospital for King’s Lynn and West Norfolk. It is very easy to do this, just go to https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/590390. It takes seconds and may reward you many times over!
- Speeding in Stanhoe:– We continue to monitor the traffic situation; encouragingly July was relatively ‘calm’; of the 18,223 vehicles that passed the sign at Longwall Barn (facing the Pond) most were pretty close to the speed limit (of 30 mph) although as always we had a few getting up to 50 mph as they went by.
- Gardens Open Day:– Although it was nothing formally to do with the PC, there was some ‘overlap’ and we were delighted that the day was such a success raising an all-time record for the church. Congratulations to Mrs Roche and her committee, the Reading Room and some serious ‘diggers’ (gardeners).
- Egmere biodigester tractor traffic:– We are conferring with management of the plant in advance of the maize harvest which starts mid-September. Please let us know if you encounter any issues, particularly in the village.
- The next Parish Council Meeting:– This will take place in the Reading Room/Village Hall at 6.00 pm on Thursday, September 9th. This time we will be allowed public participation. The Agenda will be published on the Stanhoe.org website in advance, but even if there isn’t anything that is of interest on it, please feel free to join the meeting and raise any issues that concern you, and we’ll do our best to attend to them. Also you do not have to stay throughout (normally about 1.5 hrs) and can leave at any time. And your chance to speak will be at the beginning!
Gardens Open Day:–
Stanhoe Gardens Open Day on Saturday 17th July was a most enjoyable and successful event. The sun shone and more than 300 people visited the ten gardens which were open.
The garden owners had put in a tremendous amount of time and effort getting their gardens ready. The gardens all looked stunning. The various stalls, teas and art exhibition were all popular contributing to the record profit of £4,170.39.
A huge thank you to everyone involved.
WI news:–
Stanhoe & Barwick WI are pleased to announce that normal service is resumed! We were back indoors with a speaker for our August meeting and with plenty of prospective new members. Norfolk Milliner, Rebecca Tate, spoke to us, followed by tea and cake and a good old natter. It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.

In addition to the above services, we are planning to offer in the near future:

HAVE YOU ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT YOU’D LIKE TO JOIN A CHOIR?
YES, but, “I CAN’T SING”?
Bet you can! You just need the right environment…
“I DON’T UNDERSTAND HARMONIES!”
There’s no need : you can learn as you go along.
“I WOULDN’T DARE DO AN AUDITION”
You won’t have to : just come and join in.
“I WOULD BE TOO SCARED TO OPEN MY MOUTH”
No, you wouldn’t: we have all felt like that.
“I WON’T KNOW ANYBODY”
We are very friendly: someone will always talk to you.
“I CAN’T READ MUSIC”
There is no need: most of us can’t, but we are taught and encouraged every step of the way.
“WHAT IF I MESS UP IN A PERFORMANCE?”
You won’t: the rehearsals see to that. And it isn’t compulsory to sing in concerts, either, but nearly everyone does, as it is so rewarding: you are ‘on a high’ for hours!
“CAN I JUST COME IN AND LISTEN TO A REHEARSAL?”
Yes, of course!
Hunstanton Community Centre, Avenue Road, Hunstanton PE36 5BW
