Stanhoe Open Gardens:–

A reminder that the Stanhoe Open Gardens will be held on Saturday 1st June 2019 from 2:00pm to 5:30pm – Entry £5 for ALL gardens, children under 12 free.

A variety of gardens will be open in Stanhoe and Barwick. All are welcome to come and have a look around and enjoy the various stalls, including tombola, cakes, plants, books and bric a brac. Pen Roche will be serving her delicious cream teas as usual, this year at The Reading Room on Cross Lane.

An additional attraction for 2019 will be an exhibition in All Saints’ Church by Stanhoe’s WI. Pamela Austin says “On 1st June 2019 Stanhoe & Barwick WI celebrates the centenary of its day of inauguration – and we haven’t reached 100 years by making jam and singing Jerusalem! Come along to All Saints’ Church on 1st June and see what our individual aspirations and achievements are. See where we go and what we do from photographs, displays and more.”

Our visitors to Open Gardens Day often comment on the friendly welcome they receive in Stanhoe! This is made possible by the enthusiasm of volunteers who offer their time on the afternoon to help out on the stalls and serve tea. The stalls rely on the kind contributions of friends and neighbours, so if you are able to offer cakes, plants, books, tombola prizes or bric a brac we would be very grateful!

If you would like to contribute please call Felicity on 01485 518363 or frlyons59@gmail.com – we are happy to come and collect. Proceeds from the day go towards essential maintenance of our beautiful church and churchyard. Thank you!

Stanhoe Village Screen:–

The Keeper: (15) Real life Drama/Romance, on Monday 10th June at 7:30pm

The extraordinary story of a German POW Bert Trautmann. Talent-spotted playing football in the camp by the manager of St Helens Town, he stayed on in England at the end of the war and married the manager’s daughter. Facing down hostility and abuse for being German, he went on to be signed by Manchester City, securing victory for his team in the 1965 Cup Final despite a broken neck. This is a wonderful story of forgiveness and reconciliation.

Venue: Stanhoe Reading Room and Village Hall, Cross Lane, PE31 8PS

Ten-Bob Appeal:–

Stanhoe & Barwick WI would like to ask for the help of Stanhoe residents in locating the family of some past villagers. We have unearthed from our archives several letters, which are ‘thank yous’ from Stanhoe WWII servicemen. The WI gave them 10/for Christmas in 1943 and/or 1944.

Our aim is to find a relative of each serviceman and present the original letter. We have already handed over two letters: to the son of Cecil Oldfield (Gerald) and to the younger brother of Maurice Ayres (Michael).

If you can help locate the family of the following, please contact Pamela (01485 518033) or Valerie (01485 576261)
