Advance Notice:–

Thursday 6th December 2:00pm:– in The Reading Room, Cross Lane, Stanhoe PE31 8PS. We will be entertained By Three’s Company, performing poetry and prose in “Countdown for Christmas”.

Wednesday 12th December:– Christmas lunch for members.

We begin 2019 with a meeting on 10th January (ie. not the first Thursday of the month as is usual)

Parish Notices:–

• Better Broadband for Norfolk Update:– The following update has been received from the Programme Director for Better Broadband for Norfolk. The update relates to the ‘first solution’ which, in the main, covers Docking Road, Burnham Road and Station Road.

“Openreach final assurance tests found issues which are being rectified by contractor. This means I’d expect services to be available during November”.

• Highway Ranger Community Gang:– The gang visited the village in mid-October and were tasked with undertaking a number of village housekeeping duties; cutting back hedges, sweeping footpaths and cleaning signs etc.

• Norfolk Children’s Centres Consultation – You may wish to respond to the consultation on the future of Norfolk’s Children’s Centres:

• Become a Parish Councillor – Do you have a couple of hours to spare every other month? Do you want to have a say in what happens in your village? Would you like to become a Stanhoe Parish Councillor?

Stanhoe Methodist Church:–

Remembrance Sunday:– We shall be holding a Service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance at 10:45am on 11th November, when we shall be remembering those from this village who lost their lives in the First World War. All are welcome

Our Autumn season continues with:–

‘The Mercy’ (12A) Adventure/Biography/Drama, on Monday 12th November at 7:30pm.

The incredible story of amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst and his solo attempt to circumnavigate the globe. The struggles he confronted on the journey while his family awaited his return is one of the most enduring mysteries of recent times. Starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz.

Tickets £5 on the door to include a complimentary drink. Doors open 7:00pm.

Brancaster Camera Club:–

We have a busy schedule in November with three evenings planned.

• Tuesday, 6th November, 2018 - Annual Print Competition ‘Monochrome’ Judged by Nick Ackers LRPS

• Monday, 13th November - We compete for the Wisbech Trophy at Wisbech Camera Club. This is against several other clubs and is always keenly fought.

• Tuesday, 20th November, 2018 - ‘Be Creative’ by Trish Wilcox. Trish is a marvellously creative photographer & her work is very different.

Lest we Forget:–

Every year in November, the nation marks the wars that have scarred our past and the bravery of the men and women who fought them. Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday is a chance to remember not just those who fought, but what they fought for.

Origins of Armistice Day:–

Armistice Day, held on November 11 every year, commemorates the signing of the armistice between the Allies and Germany at 11am on 11 November 1918 - the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

Although hostilities continued in some areas, the armistice essentially brought an end to fours years of fighting in the First World War.

In Britain, it is tradition to pause for a two minute silence at 11am on November 11 to remember those killed in the two world wars and the British servicemen killed or injured since 1945.

The armistice was signed in Ferdinand Foch’s railway carriage in the remote Forest of Compiègne, north of Paris, at 5am on 11 November 1918, and came into force at six hours later, at 11am. (Incidentally, in 1940 Hitler forced the French to sign an armistice on German terms in the same railway carriage. )
