August is the eighth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars, and the fifth of seven months to have a length of 31 days. It was originally named Sextilis in Latin because it was the sixth month in the original ten-month Roman calendar under Romulus in 753 BC, and March was the first month of the year.
August is the latest month to claim two birthstones, Peridot and Spinel.
Peridot, with its signature lime green colour, is believed to instil power and influence in the wearer.
Spinel is available in a brilliant range of colours and is believed to protect the owner from harm and soothe away sadness.
August Birth Month Flower is the Gladiolus.
The gladiolus, or ‘sword lily’, represents remembrance, calm, integrity, and infatuation. Gladiolus indicates that the heart is being “pierced with love.”
