Christmas food collection for the Purfleet Trust: -

Stanhoe & Barwick WI are doing a collection of food for the Purfleet Trust in time for Christmas. Based in King’s Lynn, this charity provides relief for people who are homeless, or whose lifestyle puts them at risk of homelessness.

If you can spare any tins of food (particularly meat and vegetables), long-life milk, any other foodstuff that will keep, or any toiletries, please bring them along to the library session in the Reading Room from 10am to noon on any Tuesday morning up to 11th December.

If you need to arrange an alternative drop-off, or have any questions, contact Geraldine Butcher tel: 518025 or email geraldine@stanhoe.org

Burnham Market Community Car Scheme: -

In the recent quarterly draw prizewinners were Mrs K Bowern, Stanhoe, and members from Burnham Overy Staithe and Brancaster Staithe

Village Litter: -

For some years, Mr. John Seedhouse carried out a litter pick in the village on an almost daily basis and Parish Councillors want to thank John for all his efforts on this front. Unfortunately, John has moved from the village and litter is becoming an increasing problem. The Parish Council would like to ask all residents to consider picking up any litter they find in the vicinity of their own homes or anywhere else around the village. In this way, litter could be kept under control and Stanhoe would continue to be an attractive village for all. Your co-operation would be greatly appreciated.

And finally some December ‘facts’: -

The 2012 phenomenon: According to Wikipedia, –the 2012 phenomenon comprises a range of eschatological beliefs according to which cataclysmic or transformative events will occur on 21st December 2012’.

This is also when the Mayan calendar is set to end.

N.B. for those of you with school age children this also marks the end of term !!

And finally, finally: -

May I wish you and all of your close-ones a very Happy Christmas.

Below is the first verse of a Carol I remember from my school days, we sang it in Latin – magical !!

Sue Atkins

Personent hodie–
voces puerulae,
laudantes iucunde
–qui nobis est natus,
–summo Deo datus,
et de virgineo ventre procreatus.

On this day earth shall ring
with the song children sing–
to the Lord, Christ our King,
–born on earth to save us;–
him the Father gave us.”

Refrain–

Id-e-o-o-o, id-e-o-o-o,”
Id-e-o gloria in excelsis Deo!
