Saints Alive: Stanhoe and Barwick Newsletter
June 2024
Parish Council meeting: from 8th May 2024
I am pleased to report that I have been elected chair of the Parish Council for a further year, along with my very able deputy, Tim Fitzjohn. We are both very glad to be able to continue with our work for the parish for a little longer. Stanhoe is a beautiful village with an interesting and diverse community and it has been a pleasure getting to know everyone better since becoming Chair last year. Through the summer celebrations, open gardens, monthly open bar nights, coffee mornings, WI, and the village screen, and much more, there is a great deal of energy and activity – very little of which is anything to do with me! – but it is so good to feel the community spirit alive and well in Stanhoe. I am very keen for the Parish Council to support and encourage this village to thrive and I do feel we are making progress.
Two Parish Councillors have stood down in the last few months – Wayne Leighton, who you may know has been involved with the Council for some years, first as Parish Clerk and more recently as a Councillor. And Emma Law who has recently moved away from the village. I would like to thank them both for their hard work and support and wish them both well.
A new councillor, Rachel Wilson, was voted on to the Council at the meeting, and a further vacancy exists. If you would like to join us, or if we can answer any queries in relation to the role of parish councillor, please do contact the parish clerk, Nicki Smith at stanhoe.council@gmail.com.
Both the minutes of the Parish Council Meeting and the Annual Parish Meeting are available on the PC website, but I would like to highlight a couple items which may be of particular interest.
Road Safety:–
There is considerable support for improvements to road safety in the village. Speed of traffic is a concern and is being monitored by our dedicated Speedwatch team and by the location of SAM machines at various points in the village. The PC are now looking at the possibility of having permanent SAM machines nearer to the entrances to the village which may help to remind people that they do need to slow down as they enter rather than by the time they leave the village. We have also discussed the need for safer pedestrian routes and we intend to vigorously pursue installing pavements/trods/permissive paths all the way round the village. The priority will be the Bircham Road which is unacceptably dangerous for pedestrians of all ages and abilities. We realise this will take time and considerable amounts of money but there are ways of raising funds for this purpose. We will report back on our progress. If you have any comments or suggestions, or if you have experienced safety issues on the village roads, please do let us know via stanhoe.council@gmail.com
D Day:–
Our village celebration for D DAY is coming up on 8th June. We have live music, a bbq, games, crafts, the infamous Stanhoe dog show, our resident celebrity Tim Bentinck as MC, a 1940’s hat competition (open to all), a raffle with fabulous prizes and much more. If you have yet to get your tickets please contact stanhoeboxoffice@gmail.com. Tickets are just £5 per person, to include a BBQ lunch, and children 12 and under are free. We are looking for volunteers to help on the day and would also appreciate donations of cakes, buns, biscuits and cup cakes for the cake stall and for the lunch. If you can help in anyway, please contact Laura at laurajpocock@yahoo.co.uk or Rachel at rachelmw404@gmail.com.
In any event I do hope you can join us on the 8th for what should be a fabulous afternoon.
And, finally, I would like to express my thanks to my fellow Parish Councillors for all their hard work and support over the last 12 months and I look forward to another successful year.
Mike Wilson,Chair Stanhoe Parish Council

STANHOE VILLAGE SCREEN:
are pleased to announce our second film for this summer season.
WICKED LITTLE LETTERS (15) (Crime/comedy) on Monday 17th June at 7.30 pm.
A 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a dark, absurd scandal in this riotous mystery comedy. Based on a stranger-than-fiction true story, Wicked Little Letters follows two neighbours: deeply-conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and fellow residents start to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town’s women, led by Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan), begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss and Rose might not be the culprit after all.
Colman and Buckley are an exceptional double-act whose comedy arises from their distinct deliveries, mannerisms, and internal approach.
Warning: very strong language
