Saints Alive: Stanhoe and Barwick Newsletter

March 2022

Parish Council Matters:–

  • Traffic:– Through January the SAM 2 sign was positioned at the Pond* facing Burnham Market about 100 yards after the 30 mph restriction sign on entry into the village. It was therefore recording nearly everything coming in to Stanhoe which totalled 24,144 vehicles. This means at least 48,000 drove through Stanhoe during the month. (*Btw some still feel the Pond should be called by its old name, the (Gravel) Pit, but that seems to have fallen out of use, and it is doubted the pub nor the ducks would want to change back the name of their home landmark).
  • Church Lane:– The vegetation and hedges have been well cut back thereby permitting much easier passage for cars and pedestrians. This work was hugely appreciated and our thanks go to Church Farm for their efforts.
  • Other village lanes:– Please keep your eyes out for the annual Litter Pick which will take place when the weather is a bit kinder in the spring.
  • Annual General Meeting:– This is scheduled for Wednesday May 11th. Drinks and nibbles will be provided at 7:00pm after the meeting. All are most welcome.
  • Queens Platinum Jubilee:– We hope some celebrations will be on the cards over the weekend of June 4th/5th. We will pass on any news, and suggestions are welcome.
  • Gardens Open:– As previously advised, the very popular Stanhoe Gardens Open Day will be on Saturday June 18th this year (usually 2:00 pm). Please plan to come with your friends if you can.
  • War Memorial:– We have been in contact with the War Memorials Trust to maintain and repair of the Pond Monument. If anyone wishes to suggest any suitable local contractor, please contact our Clerk.
  • Power Cut:– Stanhoe suffered a total (local) power cut on January 19th that lasted at least 2 1/2 hours from the middle of the afternoon until well after dark. This type of event is obviously of concern to the elderly and sick and we worry for those who may need help. Many phones do not work without power, so we must rely on neighbours and friends to be aware and offer help if they can. Mobile phones mostly continue to function and one can always call our Clerk, Wayne Leighton on his mobile (07789 887 380) and one can also always call the emergency services. We still have a list of ‘volunteers’ from the lockdowns who would do what they can if needed; but this cannot be more than an informal ‘last line of defence’.

We will discuss this issue in more depth at our next meeting.

Hunstanton choir:– Correction to start time

Our choir began rehearsals, as planned, on 5th January – but we would like more people to be singing!

  • Where – The Christian Fellowship Hall, Downs Close, Hunstanton, PE36 5HU

  • When – Wednesdays, starting 5th January 2022

  • Time – 7:00pm – finish at 9:00 pm.

  • The first week is free so you can come along and have a go and see if it is for you!

  • Lesley Trebbick, Chairman https://hunstantonchoir.co.uk/
