Cheese, please!

An expert shares her love of cheese with the WI.

There was much enthusiastic munching and excited conversation at Stanhoe and Barwick WI’s February meeting when Estelle Bray visited with a selection of English cheeses.

Estelle with her cheeses

Estelle had worked in a delicatessen specialising in cheeses for many years, and had sliced cheese from 56-lb truckles, as well as huge wheels, but our tastings were of a dainty size.

We were invited to taste Wensleydale, Red Leicester, Cheshire, Cheddar, Blue Stilton, and Shropshire Blue cheeses whilst being given the background to their production, and how to cut and store them.

With Stanhoe being a village where the two shops sold only Red Leicester cheese during the years they were open, this was eye-opening.

The afternoon was much enjoyed by a record attendance of 23 members.
