Those in peril on the sea

Stanhoe WI members learn about the work of the Lifeboats.

Stanhoe and Barwick WI members had a really fun afternoon in March, with lots of laughs, when Kate Craven and Jackie Merrils, both “crew wives” and Hunstanton volunteers, came to speak about the RNLI and Hunstanton Lifeboat Station.

It was in 1824 that The Institution for the Preservation of Lives and Property From Shipwreck came into being, later renamed The Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

There are 238 lifeboat stations in the UK, with 458 lifeboats and seven hovercraft. It costs £1,400 to train a crew member, and £3,399 for each person’s kit. The RNLI’s vision is “To keep our people safe, and to save everyone”. The viability of all lifeboat stations is dependent on their usage, and is assessed by Commander Tim Lawrence regularly.

Hunstanton has a hovercraft, as most of its callouts are for rescuing people from the beach, or the mudflats, or rocky outcrops, when cut off by the incoming tide. People with inflatables and dogs are also rescued, to prevent worried people going into the sea to rescue them. Deeper water rescues, from boats, such as from Wells, are served by the larger and more complex Shannon-class lifeboats. Launching nowadays is by tractor instead of horses as years ago!

WI merchandise on a table

We were told of various forms of fundraising, such as “Launch a Memory” on new lifeboats, Betty’s Pots for coin collecting, and the RNLI merchandise sold in the lifeboat station shops. A wonderful selection of gifts to buy was available on a stall set up in our meeting room too. With two such vivacious speakers it really was a fun afternoon.

After tea and cake our secretary gave us a greater understanding of HM Coastguard service locally, which is there alongside the lifeboat stations, with volunteers working tirelessly in the background, mostly on land, to support the lifeboat service before a rescue at sea is needed.

In a different vein WI members were asked to make a simple decoration promoting our WI for an umbrella at Docking Umbrella festival next month. And of course all the upcoming WI activities were promoted to members.

We all left in good spirits at the end of the afternoon.

Notes from the Chair

Update on progress from the Parish Council Chair

I hope you are all well and not suffering too much from the effects of the extraordinary amount of rain we are having this year so far. We are aware that there have been problems on roads on the fringes of the parish which have resulted in traffic being diverted through the village, increasing the amount and speed of vehicles, and churning up mud along the narrow roads such as Church Lane. It has highlighted the need, once again, for improving the safety of our village roads for all and we have agreed a renewed focus on speed awareness and the provision of footpaths on Bircham Road. We hope this will be achieved through a combination of TRODS and permissive paths which will allow all pedestrians a safer route around the village. A task force will be investigating all the possibilities and will also look at the funding streams we can access to pay for this work, which will be significantly outside our normal annual budget. We will report back at a later date. We are also looking at the siting of the SAM machines to get a better indication of the speeds of vehicles coming into the village. And we will be contacting the Highways Department to ask them arrange the to clear up in Church Lane.

I would say that nothing relating to highways happens quickly, but we will persevere until we have achieved our aims.

The Parish Council and MEHM Trust (Village Hall) have held another joint meeting to discuss matters of mutual interest and one of the things agreed is a new village notice board. The old ones by the war memorial and by the village hall are both in dire need of replacement so we are to have one new notice board which will be attached to the wall of the village hall and will combine a PC/MEHM section for formal notices and a separate section which may be used by the community to advertise services, events, etc. We are applying for funding for this from the Jacks Lane Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund which has been supporting local community projects since 2015.

Late last year we discussed how we could lighten the considerable workload of our website administrator, Charles Butcher. A small group of “experts” will be trained up to take over as much of the day-to-day work as possible – they plan to meet on 14th March for the first time and they will keep us all informed of their progress and new arrangements for posting items on the website as they become available.

An organising group for the D Day celebration on Saturday 8th June has met and plans are well underway. The next meeting will be held on Monday, 25th March at 5pm in the Village Hall. Please do come along if you would like to be involved – you will be very welcome.

If there is anything you want to discuss with the Parish Council, please do not hesitate to contact us via the Parish Clerk on 01485 518301 or at stanhoe.council@gmail.com . Or, better still, why not come along to our next meeting on 8th May at 5.30pm. This meeting will be followed at 6.30pm by the Annual Parish Meeting which is an opportunity for all our residents to come and meet the Parish Councillors and find out more about what we are doing. I look forward to seeing you then.

To access the agendas and minutes for PC meetings please go to the dedicated parish council website – stanhoe.norfolkparishes.gov.uk.

Norfolk County Council

Have you say on savings proposals

Norfolk County Council are currently running five consultations around specific savings proposals.

There are three from Community and Environmental Services. The proposals being consulted on are:

The reduction of street lights across Norfolk in areas where this will be safe
Increase offering of pre-booked visits and add new paid services to increase income at the Norfolk Record Office
Reducing the opening hours at some recycling centres to deliver a more consistent approach, in line with neighbouring authorities
These consultations close at midnight on 22 March 2024.

They are also consulting on proposals affecting Adult Social Care, these are:

Make some changes to the charging policy, which proposes reducing the Minimum Income Guarantee (MIG)
Introducing an arrangement fee for people who self-fund their social care in line with Care Act 2014 guidance
These two consultations are open until midnight on 17 May 2024.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue

Free electrical fire safety events

Three electrical fire safety events will be held at different locations in the county next week, delivered by Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service.

Members of the public are invited to bring along their electric blankets and portable heaters to be tested and will also be able to speak to the fire service about fire safety in the home.

The events will also be attended by Trading Standards and Healthwatch Norfolk. This will give people the chance to find out about product safety and advice, and accessing help with health and social care.

The electrical safety day nearest to Stanhoe will take place from 10.30am to 4pm at:
King’s Lynn North Fire Station on Thursday 7 March
There is no need to book – just turn up with your electrical items.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service was successful in bidding for funding from national campaigning charity Electrical Safety First to hold these events, which aim to help people stay safe in their homes.

Tracey Francis, Prevention Coordinator at Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service, who made the funding bid and has organised the events, said: “Our experience shows that often people are using unsafe electrical items which could put them at risk of a fire, and we are passionate about preventing this from happening.

There are things everyone can be doing in their home to reduce the risk of fire. Some of these are:

Testing your smoke alarm regularly
Staying at least one metre from any portable heaters
Charging devices when you are awake, alert and around
Keeping tea towels and oven gloves away from gas hobs
Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service offer free Home Fire Safety visits for people over 65 or anyone who has a disability which could make it more difficult to react to a fire.

To book a visit for yourself, a friend or family member or to refer someone as part of your work or volunteering role, visit the Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service web pages. https://www.norfolk.gov.uk/article/56991/Free-electrical-fire-safety-events-being-held-by-Norfolk-Fire-and-Rescue-Service
