Litter picked

Modest St George’s Day turnout nabs a few bagsful.

Litter pickers ready to set off

A brace of champagne bottles, a dead rat, prescription drugs, a pair of knickers and a complete car bumper were among the sights that confronted a team of Stanhoe litter pickers on a warm Friday afternoon.

Local litterman John Seedhouse having done his usual fine job in keeping the village centre tidy, the Big Tidy Up team were hard pushed to find much rubbish. By venturing as far afield as the Bircham crossroads, the Creake turning and the Barwick Road T-junction, however, they did manage to fill several bags.

Thanks to the WI for promoting and supporting the event.

Just in time for Easter, a talk on stained glass.

Christ in majestyThe wonderful Kempe east window in Stanhoe church (left) featured in Geoff Robinson’s whistle-stop tour through the history of stained glass at the April WI meeting.

His photographs ranged from medieval to Art Decco designs set in a wide range of local churches, making us want to visit them all.

The “suncatchers” featuring in the competition neatly emphasised the theme.

The chatter continued and expanded over tea!

WI March 2010

Handbell ringing keeps the WI busy.

Unusually we were asked to look out pictures of ourselves doing unusual things: and en masse, as our speaker Christine Dean gave us each a hand bell (numbered and named with the note), we proceeded to make music as never seen before.

Handbell ringers

“Happy birthday to you”, we played and sang to our president. We followed this with a selection from Swan Lake, with harmonies, and when we could sing along to our tunes we excelled.

There was a recruitment drive to take part in a murder/mystery play as entertainment for our party, and many other things to join in.

The afternoon really was, in the words of the new national logo, the “WI Inspiring Women”.

What horrors lurk in a mascara brush?

photo: incurable_hippie

mascara brushHorrors emerged at the February meeting: “The shelf life of a tube of Mascara is three months before it becomes a hotbed of bacteria and mites.”

So said experienced make-up artist Sharon Haynes as she transformed an apprehensive member into a glamorous lady.

Suitably energised we rushed around booking lunch dates, outings, and other visits, and even contemplated the Federation competition subject “How Stanhoe and Barwick WI has changed since its inception in 1919.”

What a busy afternoon.

WI January 2010

A fun meeting despite the snow.

WI members at the January meeting

A small but cheerful January meeting

Ten stalwart members battled through the snow for the annual photoshoot, a jolly time arranging social events, and a quiz accompanied by tea and chocolate biscuits. Even without a speaker it was an action packed afternoon.
