1639 map of Stanhoe

This fine map from 1639 shows a pattern of pre-enclosure strip cultivation that had probably changed little since medieval times.

You can also download the entire map as a PDF file (6 MB, opens in a new window if your browser can display PDFs directly).

As of September 2012 this full-size version has some overlaps and mismatches because it was scanned as a series of sheets traced from the original by the late Ken Foskett.

In due course Stanhoe Archive will improve the fit between the map’s seven “tiles”. Our long-term aim is a web-based viewer that will be able to overlay all our historic maps onto a modern Ordnance Survey base layer.
