The horse driven elevator at Station Farm, Stanhoe in 1935

The horse walked round in a circle to power the elevator which transported the loose corn up onto the stack which was being constructed nearby.

In this photograph Marion (Dollie) Hill, nee Calver, is encouraging the horse into action.

Chris Branch says in 2011:
"The Calver girls, Marion (Dollie), Marjory, Ethel and Miggie all left Station Farm and went to London, attracted by employment and the hope of marriage. But they all returned to the place they called "HOME" for annual holidays and were more than willing to help out on the farm.

Dollie married Alistair Hill (who I understand rescued her from the unwanted attentions of an American Serviceman at a dance). They bought a bungalow and lived in Sidcup in Kent where they brought up their daughter Jane, born in 1941.

Dollie was a GPO Telephone operator at a Telephone Exchange in Kent. Jane followed suit in the same work but is now retired and lives with her Greek husband George in Athens. They met at Bristol University in the late 1960's. Like me, Jane adored being at Station Farm and she helped out on the farm and even learnt to milk."

She is hoping to join our next scheduled "Drive past" before joining a family Gathering in Northwold.
