Diane Branch the fiancee of Chris Branch, on the dismantled railway line at Stanhoe in 1965.

Chris Branch says in 2011:

During our stay in 1965 (when we were first engaged) my mother (Miggie) commissioned us to find “Quacker Grass” which as a child she used to collect from the side of the railway line. It was our last day, drizzling and windy, hence the poor quality of this image.

Back in London, Diane used to commute by British Rail on the Chingford to Liverpool Street Line - a journey taking about 20-25 minutes. Then from Liverpool Street Station, down escalators and into the London Underground (theTube) to St. Paul’s. The Tube trains were hot and so full of commuters that, (if standing because there were no vacant seats), she would stand so squashed that she had no need to hold her shoulder bag - it was trapped between herself and the next person, in mid-air. The last of the steam trains operated in London until 1966 or thereabouts.

On the dismantled railway line at Stanhoe - just as usual on her daily London commute, there were no seats. But at Stanhoe there were no rails, no trains and no other passengers!
