Save on oil

Brancaster Staithe fuel co-operative seeks new members.

As winter approaches, heating oil is not getting any cheaper in the long term. Although prices now are well below the peak they reached in the spring, the trend is ever upward.

Bulk buying can help keep heating costs down, as shown by the continuing success of the Brancaster Staithe Oil Cooperative run by Maria Spink.

In August, for example, Maria was able to negotiate a price of 56.40 p/litre for deliveries of 500 litres and above. The lowest standard prices she was quoted were 57.91 p/l for 500 litres and 57.00 p/l for 1,000 litres, giving a total saving of £7.55 for 500 litres and £6.00 for 1000 litres.

Coop prices have consistently been at least 5 p/litre below the highest quoted figures – which could be what you’re paying, unless you shop around

The highest price Maria was quoted for 500 litres was 62.44 p/l, and the amount of oil ordered through the Coop that month was more than 76,000 litres.

Maria already has around 15 Stanhoe households on her books but would welcome more members to give even greater buying power. Every three weeks she takes orders from Coop members and works to get the best price from a range of suppliers.

The Coop costs nothing to join and Maria does not charge for her hard work. Co-op members make their payments directly to whichever oil company has agreed to make the deliveries.

To get on the Brancaster Staithe Oil Cooperative mailing list, contact Maria Spink at her new email address (brancasterstaitheoil@hotmail.com) or phone 01485 210155.
