Pub hours flap

2 am opening won’t be often, says landlord.

The Duck Inn has applied for a licence to provide live outdoor music and drinks until 2 am, seven days a week.

Landlord Julian Rivett says the pub needs the late licence to cater for weddings and parties, but that he will not be allowed to open late more than 12 times a year. “If we’re lucky we might do three or four weddings a season,” he said.

He also said that he plans to wind up most functions soon after midnight: “But the licence means that we will not fall foul of the law if we are running a bit late, and it has the advantage that we don’t have to make a special licence application each time we have a function.”

“I have great concern for the people of Stanhoe, and the last thing I want to do is upset my neighbours,” Julian said.

But some neighbours are already upset, according to parish council chairman Terry Austin. Speaking on behalf of several residents, he said: “There’s some concern over the opening hours, especially when it comes to outside music until the early hours of the morning.”

“We don’t want to stifle enterprise in the village, but we do have to consider the residents,” Terry continued. “Many of us are delighted to welcome the refurbished pub to the village after its recent closure, and we hope that it will be a success and an asset to Stanhoe. But people come here to enjoy the tranquillity of this small village, and they are naturally worried by the disturbance that late night opening and loud music may bring.”

Comments have to be with the licensing authority in writing by 28 June. Terry Austin says the parish council cannot oppose the application in its own capacity, but will pass on to the Borough Council the names and addresses of any Stanhoe residents who wish to object — contact parish clerk (tel 518 409).

Alternatively, you can email comments to , Licensing Manager with the borough council.
