Harvest at Station Farm Stanhoe in the 1930's

This photo possibly taken by Bill Branch, husband of Miggie Calver, shows Harcourt Calver in the foreground with a pitchfork pitching the binder-cut corn "shoafs" onto the waggon. To the right is John Leggett, husband of Marjory Calver. Farmworkers at the time are thought to have included Gussie Ireson, and Stanley Ayres. Does the name Jimmy Stareman ring any bells? Can you help identify the "Hold ye boy" and the loaders? Look into the distance and you will see the elevator against a stack.

Chris Branch says in 2011:
"The harvest field in the 1930's would have driven the current Health and Safety Inspectors crackers. Loaders on top of a horse drawn wagon; the horses led often by a minor called a "Hold Ye Boy"; with pitchers raising each "shoaf" on the end of pitch forks almost into the faces of the "loaders" above."

Pitcher left - I think is my Uncle Harcourt Calver; Pitcher right: my wife Diane say he is my own father: Bill Branch - Miggies husband.
