All the news on our preparations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

Battle of the mugs
Stanhoe residents will be able to toast the Queen from two different Jubilee mugs.
Whatever your taste in tableware, Stanhoe will soon have a Diamond Jubilee mug to suit.
In her studio at Stanhoe Pottery on Docking Road, Geraldine Clark was mulling over her design last week. The tough stoneware mug will be decorated in relief with a crown and lettering, Geraldine says. One for the blokes, perhaps?

Geraldine plans to use plaster moulds like this crown to decorate her hand-thrown stoneware mug
It’s a busy time for Geraldine and her husband Michael as they gear up for Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios (26 May–10 June). Visitors will be welcome at Stanhoe Pottery, Geraldine says, though don’t ask to see the wonderful pot shown on the website (or on page 63 of the Open Studios booklet) – it’s already sold.
There’s no danger of running out of Jubilee mugs, however. For one past commission Geraldine produced 800 hand-made mugs.
In the Reading Room on Wednesday evening, meanwhile, a very different yet equally attractive mug was on show.

This fine china mug decorated in royal purple and gold is being launched by the Parochial Church Council.
Bill Husselby, backed by his team of professional designers, have produced a handsome mug with perhaps a more feminine look. “Stanhoe and Barwick” appears on the side of the mug opposite the royal cipher, and the inside of the rim is lettered too.
At the final Jubilee planning meeting before the big day on 4 June, planning committee chair John Seedhouse said the PCC mugs would be available for £5 each.
Although plenty of last-minute preparations remain, everything is under control for Stanhoe’s day of celebrations. There will be a treasure hunt with a real diamond prize, teas, a barbecue with licenced bar and a lively skiffle band.
Tickets are available in advance at the cinema evening on 23 May and on Tuesday mornings at the Reading Room Library.
Ordering mugs
10 young people from Stanhoe have registered to receive a free PCC mug each. Everyone else is welcome to buy as many as they would like of either type of mug, either on the day or by post.
The PCC mugs cost £5 plus postage and packing. Geraldine Clark will be setting the price of her Stanhoe Pottery mugs soon.
We’ll be publishing more mug details in due course, but don’t be afraid to pre-register your interest by emailing . Don’t forget to say whether you would like the Stanhoe Pottery or the PCC mugs, and how many of each.

Jubilee dosh
Jubilee plans gather pace as money starts to roll in.
With the Jubilee Oak in place on the playing field and a healthy-looking bank balance, Stanhoe’s plans for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on 4 June are really shaping up.
A donation of £200 from Norfolk County Council has joined £200 from the parish council, £100 from the WI and £100 from an anonymous donor.
At a public meeting on 4 April, Jubilee committee chair John Seedhouse reported that he, Derek Twell and Don Bridge had planted snowdrops donated for the occasion by Andrew Ralli. They have been positioned around the pond, at the war memorial and around the Jubilee Oak.

Felicity Lyons has kindly donated a small diamond necklace as a prize for the adult winner of the treasure hunt.

Live music will be performed throughout the evening by Kiwi Pete’s skiffle group.
Publicity flyers (see above) will go out with Saints Alive and will be available at various points around the village.
Tickets will be available by the time of the film night on 20 April.
On the day, volunteers wil be needed to set up the marquee, gazebos, straw bales and tables, and to take photos for the village archive. If you can help, please contact (tel 518 688).

Grab a mug!
Anyone under 16 will get a free Stanhoe Jubilee mug – as long as you apply soon.
Stanhoe’s plans for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee include a free commemorative mug for anyone who lives in the village and is under 16 on 4 June 2012.
The design of the Jubilee mug is still to be fixed, but it will be “personalised” for Stanhoe. The mugs will be distributed at our Jubilee celebrations on 4 June, where people who aren’t eligible for a free mug will also have the chance to buy one.
To qualify for a free mug send your name, age and address to Jubilee committee chair no later than 29 February. You can click on the link to email John, or write to him at: Michaelmas, Cross Lane, Stanhoe.
Because the mugs have to be ordered well in advance, anyone who has not let John know will not be eligible — so do it now!

Canvas confirmed
The all-important marquee for the Jubilee celebrations is now booked.
Tid Morton of Bagthorpe Farm has generously donated a marquee for the Jubilee celebration on 4 June. Marquees are likely be in great demand for the Jubilee, so this is a great result for the organising committee.
The Reading Room will be open on the day, and several Stanhoe residents have promised to lend portable gazebos. Robert Perowne will supply straw bales for seating provided that straw is available.
The planning meeting on 4 January also discussed the all-important Jubilee mugs, as well as flagpoles, bunting, a live band and the planting of a “Jubilee Oak” on the playing field.
“The budget is looking very tight, so all donations and offers of help will be appreciated,” said chairman John Seedhouse.
The Parish Council, the Parochial Church Council, the MEHM Trust and the WI have joined forces to organise the event, but everyone is welcome at the public meetings.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday 8 February at 7:00 pm in the Reading Room.

Jubilee plans
Treasure hunt and barbecue on 4 June will be Stanhoe’s contribution to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

A party in the
Reading Room
for the Queen’s
Golden Jubilee
in 2002
On 26 October representatives of the Parochial Church Council, the MEHM Trust, the Parish Council and the WI met to decide how Stanhoe should mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee next year.
After considering ideas including a garden party, a barbecue, a fish and chip supper, a fancy dress party and an event combined with the annual Open Gardens day, they chose a barbecue on Monday 4 June 2012. The actual date of the Jubilee — a bank holiday — is Tuesday 5 June.
During the afternoon there will be a walking treasure hunt around Stanhoe, followed by the barbecue from 5 pm. There will be a bar, flags and bunting, a patriotic dress code, and probably a live band.
Other suggestions to mark the occasion, such as planting daffodils and a tree, a plaque and commemorative mugs for the village children are still being considered. Bonfires and beacons on the playing field were ruled out.
The Parish Council has now taken the lead in the planning process. The next meeting will be on Wednesday 23 November at 7 pm in the village hall. All village residents are welcome to attend.
